The assessment is made up of three meetings. In the first, the learner is interviewed to determine goals, work history, and educational background.
Based on the information gathered in the interview, a series of informal assessments are carried out in a second meeting. These will include opportunities to demonstrate writing, reading, and math abilities. The assessor then takes the results and uses them to design an individual training plan to help the learner gain the knowledge needed to reach his or her goal.
During the third meeting, the learner reviews the plan and either approves it or suggests changes. The plan belongs to the learner and is reviewed regularly to make sure it is on track.
Part of the reason for an assessment is to determine whether PELC is the right agency for your needs. If not, you’ll be referred to another program.
General Educational Development (GED) is an international testing program for adults who haven’t finished high school. The tests let people show they have similar knowledge and skills to a high school graduate. In Ontario, successful GED candidates earn the Ontario High School Equivalency Certificate.

Many people attend our basic skills upgrading program in order to improve their math, reading, and writing skills. We have a comfortable, bright, and relaxed classroom. Our staff is open and friendly and available to help you learn what you need to in order to move on to high school credit courses, work, college, or life in general.
Many people take reading for granted. Once you learn how to do it, you move on and never look back. For many adults, they never get the chance to “move on” and they struggle with reading their whole lives.
Others may be able to read the words, but their comprehension of what they have just read is minimal. We work with many people who have this challenge.
Math skills are very important and, unfortunately, very challenging for many people. We work to help people learn the math skills they need for work and in their daily lives.
Trails is a participatory learning program for adults. Students work in a woodworking shop in Bloomfield. They also do research on the Millennium Trail, plants, animals, and the old railway system.
In participatory learning, students learn through participating in activities that solve real life problems or create products that have real life purposes.
The Millennium Trail runs across Prince Edward County from Picton to Bloomfield, Wellington, and onto Carrying Place, a total of 49km. Until 1995, the Trail was a CNR Rail Line. After it was no longer used as a railroad, the rail ties were pulled out. In 2000, the County began a project to create a recreational trail. This is the Millennium Trail project. The Trails team works with the Millennium Trail Committee to fix up the Trail.

Trails offers participants the chance to:
● learn to use woodworking tools
● experience looking after the Trail system
● do something different
● learn about the history of the old railway
● learn about wildlife and nature along the way
● give something back to the community
● communicate well with others
● work as part of a team
The Program Goals are:
● to train people to use various woodworking tools
● inspire the desire to upgrade skills
● build confidence and pride
● actively contribute to the community
● give people the opportunity to learn skills that they can put on a resume
● give participants concrete evidence of their learning
Computer training is very important. If you don’t have at least a passing knowledge of computers, you can easily be left behind. We have computers in the classroom, as well as a computer lab. Students are encouraged to add computers to their studies.

Essential Skills are the skills needed for work, learning, and life. They provide the foundation for learning all other skills and enable people to evolve with their jobs and adapt to workplace change.
The Essential Skills Curriculum we teach prepares people for what they need to know to do specific jobs.

Thursday mornings from 10:00 - 12:00, we have a Social Learning Class.

We’ll work with you to design a program to fit your needs. These may include preparing for the police exam, assistance with meeting Army entrance requirements, upgrading for college or university, or preparing you for other job specific testing.
